You might have noticed that this blog has been pretty quiet lately. Truthfully, the past semester was an extremely busy one for me, and I had very little time to get out and take pictures of campus buildings, much less to even write the articles in the first place. (I almost always write and research campus architecture before taking my photos, which gives me something to do during academic breaks.) The ten posts I got in are all that I had time to document, and I unfortunately have nothing in the queue either, unlike the winter. As a result, the blog won’t be updated until late August at the earliest. Rest assured that I will be completing the remainder of the write-ups over the summer, and my goal is to finish taking photos of all the campus buildings by winter break next semester. Going into my senior year, I have a much clearer schedule (Tuesdays and Thursdays fully off), so I plan to devote those days to photography.
I luckily got an internship in Chicago this summer at a smaller residential firm, which was a miracle because the market for architecture is terrible right now. That means I’ll be staying in Illinois until mid-August.
Regarding the scope of this blog, the focus on campus architecture will remain for now. I think I was a little overambitious when planning it--I knew I wouldn’t be able to do anything west of the Olentangy, but now I plan on omitting much of the medical campus as well. This is for two reasons:
The architecture is generally less remarkable, save a few Collegiate Gothic buildings like Hamilton Hall
These aren’t buildings I can freely explore like I could on main campus
Another thing is that I plan to expand off-campus. I’ve mentioned this in my “about” page before, mainly regarding Columbus, but I got a little overexcited and thus far have completed photography for four Ohio towns and one Illinois city. (If it makes you feel any better, I traveled to these places on the weekends, when campus buildings are closed and locked.) I’ve also finished the write-ups for two of them, but they won’t be uploaded until my final Ohio State article is complete and published. Right now, my biggest priorities are Ohio’s larger cities (Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Dayton, Youngstown), county seats with interesting architecture (Lancaster, Warren, Bowling Green, etc.), and places/county seats near my hometown (Chicago, Geneva, Rockford). The timing on these is gonna be much looser, and for all I know I might miss half of them. My main priority is going to be Columbus, though.
Here’s a little teaser of the four Ohio towns I have been to--see if you can guess which ones!
As always, stay tuned, and thanks for reading!
