After visiting Newark’s Home Building Association Bank, I went to Sidney to see Ohio’s other Sullivan jewel box--the People’s Federal Savings and Loan Association. The courthouse square has a lovely amalgamation of commercial architecture. Unlike Newark, I feel that the quality of my photos is much better (partially due to lighting), and I did not miss things.
Sidney is a city in western Ohio which is the county seat of Shelby County. It has a population of 20,400 people as of 2020.
Sidney was founded in 1820 to become the new county seat of Shelby County, replacing Hardin. The land it sits on, along the Great Miami River, stems from a 70-acre donation by Charles Starrett. Early growth was spurred by its connection to the Miami-Erie Canal in 1837 and railroads in the 1850s. A century later, the construction of I-75 resulted in further population increases. The city is probably best known for the presence of the National Historic Landmark People's Federal Savings & Loan Assocation, designed by Louis Sullivan.
