Sycamore is a smaller rural town west of suburban Kane County. It has a large, grand courthouse, and the historic downtown features many buildings from the early Victorian era.

The first European settlers arrived in the Sycamore area in 1835, and the town was founded as Orange and platted in 1837. The first courthouse and hotel were built in 1839, and steady growth occurred over the following decades. The Sycamore & Cortland Railroad extended to the city in the late 1850s, and 41 businesses were located there by 1855. The railroad spurred further population growth in Sycamore after the Civil War.
